Data Marts
The traditional approaches to delivering business intelligence solutions involve either bolting a report generator to the individual underlying systems or attempting to meld the entire organisations data set into one complex corporate data warehouse. Both approaches are fraught with problems and prone to failure through over simplification or complexity.
The data mart approach follows a middle line. Data is abstracted out of operational systems and restructured into a format that is optimised for reporting and analysis thus removing the need to understand the complex data structures required by most 'transaction' type systems. Unlike data warehouses however, data marts target specific areas of business usage rather than attempting to provide one giant repository containing all of the organisations data. In this way individual data marts targeted at specific business needs can be implemented in a quick and cost-effective fashion.
